The Publishing House: Constant Activity
The primary purpose of a publishing house is the fascinating activity of mass publishing. Constant activity and chaos characterize the publishing place where the process of production and dissemination of literature or information takes place. The main activity of publishing houses is to make information available for public view. In some of the cases, self publication or independent publication may also take place. In rest of the cases, publishing houses are extremely useful. Traditionally, these houses are involved in the distribution of printed works such as books and newspapers. With the rise of technology, the scope of publishing has moved into the digital era, expanding to include electronic versions of books and periodicals as well as websites and blogs. Publishing houses are hubs of constant activity. After all, publishing is a long drawn process consisting of various stages until the end product is reached. It involves acquisition, production, marketing, printing and distribution of magazines, newspapers, musical works, books, literary works, software and other works dealing with information, including the electronic media. Writers often submit a proposal to the publishing house. Most of the submissions are submitted on external disk drives from authors whose work has not been published before. After elimination of some, the work of quality is identified by the editors. Once this work is accepted, the editors in the publishing houses negotiate the purchase of intellectual property rights and agree on royalty rates. After that, the authors of traditional printed materials sell exclusive territorial intellectual property rights that go with the range of countries in which distribution is proposed. When agreement on the scope of publication and format has been done, the parties in a book agreement must decide on the royalty rates. This essentially means they should agree upon the retail price that will be paid to the authors. Once the immediate commercial decisions are taken and technical issues are solved, the authors may be asked by the publishing house to improve the quality of the work through rewriting. Editors may also help him edit the work. Editors make sure that the work matches the market requirement regarding spelling and grammar. Editing may also include some basic structural changes. The next step taken up by the publishing house is design or the layout. This involves deciding on the paper quality, binding method and proofreading. The activities such as typesetting, page layout and imprint has been computerized with the advent of digital technology. In case the work is to be distributed online, the final files are saved in formats which are compatible with the operating systems of the hardware used for reading. This usually means they are saved as PDF files. Publishing houses are almost operating as big businesses where publication of books proves to be extremely beneficial. |
